Do CEOs really have time to waste on emotional intelligence?

Scott Adams, the creator of Dilbert, is famously critical of the workplace with his cynical cartoons.  He entertains millions with his experiences of jargon-filled corporate speak and the lack of emotionally honest messages.

At too many company meetings, people don't really say what they believe and hide behind the kind of language we all find hilarious in a Dilbert cartoon.  Most comply with the edict of leaving emotions at the door, or risk falling off the corporate ladder.

But what would happen if more CEOs encouraged their teams to develop emotional intelligence skills?  In other words, the ability to better understand and relate to people.

Yes, I appreciate it might be better to leave all that uncomfortable, touchy-feely stuff to the HR folks!  But, just maybe, more emotionally intelligent CEOs might be better at motivating their teams, winning over customers, and delivering increased profits.  

So EQ or IQ?  Which do you think a CEO needs more of?
